LooP _ Frederic Rzewski - The People United Will Never Be Defeated

Patrizia Scascitelli 4tet - LIVE at the "Statale" University of Milan - 1975

Born in Rome (1949, October 15), Patrizia Scascitelli began playing music at eight years old.

Her beginning collaborations were with well-known musicians in Rome such as Massimo Urbani and Bruno Tommaso. Her first jazz recording, "Ballata" (VISTA TPL1 1113 - RCA - 1974) inspired by Italian folk music, was one of the recordings most representative of Italian musical expression of that time.

During a brief stay in Milan, Patrizia worked with musicians active on the scene such as saxophonist Daniele Cavallanti. Upon returning to Rome, she formed the quartet, Life Force, with drummer Marvin "Boogaloo" Smith, Karl Potter on percussion and Larry Dinwiddie, saxophone. From this group came the still sought-after live recording from Statale di Milano (Vedette 1975).

In 1981, she moved to New York, where she currently resides.

Nuove Tendenze Del Jazz Italiano Vol.2 - 1975

Born in an antifascist family (his paternal uncles had been seriously engaged in the antifascist resistance during World War II), Sergio Veschi supports the political struggle, especially that of the students and juvenile movements of his town and, in particular, that of Milan State University where he is enrolled as a working student in the faculty of political science, also holding some leading roles in the years 1969-73.

Towards the end of his political militancy he is asked to organize jazz concerts within the cultural activities promoted by the Movement.

Therefore, he organizes different concerts with American and Italian groups in the years 1973-76, among which Max Roach quartet, Don Cherry, Mal Waldron, Sam Rivers and others. He is also concerned with the promotion and diffusion of jazz music, mainly addressed to young people and workers, involving several Italian jazzmen, which leads to a famous (for that time) Italian Jazz Festival in the Main Hall of Milan University between late 1974 and early 1976.
From which, on his own initiative, 5 live records are taken and distributed by by ECP (Editions Culture Popular) an independent label which no longer exists.

These records are:
VPA 101 Giorgio Gaslini Quartet - Concerto della Resistenza
VPA 102 Claudio Lo Cascio New Jazz Society - South-East Pipe-Lines
VPA 103 Mario Schiano - Concerto Della Statale
VPA 104 Quartetto di Guido Mazzon - Ecologia Ecologia
VPA 105 Patrizia Scascitelli - Patrizia Scascitelli

The night when Alberto Alberti called him to suggest to record the trio of Sam Rivers ("The Quest" VPA 106), passing through Italy from Hong Kong to attend the Bergamo Jazz Festival, comes the Red Records, a longest label of Italian jazz, defined by Joe Henderson "The Blue Note of Europe".
This record, and the previous one (VPA 107), witness the end of one of the most important Festival ever organized in Italy and, at the same time, the birth of one of the labels that have contributed to record the history of Jazz.

Claudio Lo Cascio New Jazz Society - South-East Pipe-Lines - 1975

Many years ago, before jazz was recognized its value through all those songs then defined world, were very few Italian musicians who draw on the national folk to let their music breathe freely. Even fewer those who were able to conduct their "local" language at the same level as the global.

Among these few, brave explorers music, can not be forgotten, in addition to the great Trovesi, the Sicilian piano player Claudio Lo Cascio and his New Jazz Society.

Mario Schiano - Concerto della Statale - 1975

This live concert, recorded 30 november 1975, documents the third evening of the exhibition NUOVE TENDENZE DEL JAZZ ITALIANO - news trends of italian jazz - promoted by the student movement of the Statale University of Milan, with the artistic production of Sergio Veschi, the “future” producer of Red Record.

In the other evenings have played on the stage Patrizia Scascitelli, Guido Mazzon, i Cadmo, Claudio Lo Cascio, O.M.C.I., Gaetano Liguori, Giorgio Gaslini and others.
Also the other two recordings will be published on this blog.

« Born in Naples, after beginning his career in his hometown’s dance halls, Mario Schiano pioneered free jazz in italy at the very beginning of the Sixties, and has been a leading figure on the italian music scene since the beginnings of the Gruppo Romano Free Jazz in 1966. His musical production covers an unusually broad range, from free improvisation to traditional Neapolitan songs, the unyfing factors being his energy, inquisitive spirit, humour and integrity. In addition he fulfilled the function of promoter for the “cutting edge” music when no-one else would try.

After countless concerts and festivals he founded Controindicazioni, since 1988 the most important forum for free jazz and european improvisation. Several generations of italian musicians have by now benefited by his actions and example. He’s a founder member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra, arguably the most important aggregation in italian jazz today, now reaching worldwide recognition for the whole national scene. Many foreign visitors to Controindicazioni or members of the audiences of the Instabile concerts all over Europe were surprised when they spotted him acting in one of the internationally acclaimed movies by Nanni Moretti or enjoyed his after-hours keyboards playing.

Living Theatre performance, Urbino 1969.
The Mario Schiano Trio performed opposite.

His career includes concerts and records with all the most important european improvisors: Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Paul Rutherford, Evan Parker, Peter Kowald, Barry Guy, Vyacheslav Ganelin, Maarten Altena; among his early collaborators there are Bruno Tommaso and Giancarlo Schiaffini, while later on he introduced such talents as Massimo Urbani, Eugenio Colombo and Sebi Tramontana, to name but a few ».

Extracted from the “Mario Schiano Discography”,
by Francesco Martinelli, Bandecchi & Vivaldi ed. 2000.

The first edition of this discography was published, in Italian only, in 1996. This expanded edition is in English, updates the recordings to 2000 and, in addition to a straight discographical listing, includes occasional comments from Martinelli and the full text of reviews, taken from publications such as Cadence, Coda, Improjazz, and The wire, even the very occasional one from Down Beat! Sprinkled throughout are a range of fascinating photographs which not only support the text but indicate - as always in these circumstances - the changing fashions, particularly through hair styles. In addition to official recordings there are appendices listing 'other' recordings (tapes, TV, radio broadcasts), a bibliography (largely of record reviews) and an overview essay by Martinelli. Indexes are provided. Altogether, this excellent publication should do much to increase awareness of Mario Schiano for those who have not yet heard him.
